The U.N. Advance Mission in Sudan reports continuing violence in the western Darfur region with several routes in South Darfur state closed to U.N. movement.
In West Darfur, the situation appears to have calmed since heavy fighting north of Sirba Jan. 20, but the area remains tense, UNAMIS said Monday.
Armed tribesmen in South Darfur were reported to have attacked internally displaced persons gathering at Djedja, killing six people and displacing more than 4,000 more persons late last week, UNAMIS said. Only three routes were clear for movement.
In North Darfur at mid-week, unidentified assailants burned several huts, including one belonging to a local non-governmental organization.
Friday, a group of IDPs in Abu Shouk camp, who claimed not to have received ration cards and not to have received food since their arrival, looted food items, leading to a riot and halting food distribution.
Humanitarian agencies were planning to meet to discuss and identify alternative sites to relocate some 25,000 IDPs who have arrived in Abu Shouk camp during the past two months fleeing insecurity in their home areas.
